The Jewish Son-in-Law

The Jewish Son-in-Law

Oct 23

A Jewish couple, not particularly religious or observant, are shocked when their only daughter declares that she is in love with an ultra-orthodox young man who intends to spend his life dedicated to the study of Torah and Talmud.  The wife insists that her husband perform his function as head of the family and sit down for a talk with the young man.

Father:   So you intend to study Torah and Talmud all your life?

Scholar:   Yes sir!  I feel called to dedicate my life to study.

Father:   So how will you be able to live?

Scholar:   I’m not worried; God will provide!

Father:  And you love my daughter and want to marry?

Scholar:   Yes I do; I love her very much.

Father:   How do you intend to take care of my daughter, your wife?

Scholar:   I’m not worried; God will provide!

Father:   And you want children?

Scholar:   The Bible calls upon us to be fruitful and multiply; I want many, many children!

Father:   How do you intend to take care of this large family?

Scholar:   I’m not worried; God will provide!

At this point the father throws up his hands in frustration and stomps out of the room.  His wife has been waiting nervously in the next room to hear about their discussion.

Mother:   So NU?  How did the talk go?

Father:   Actually, pretty well.  Our future son-in-law already thinks of me as God.
